For Peter

I’ve been giddy these past few months
as the plans fell into place.
What started as a simple pleasure
has grown into so much more.
Listening to the laughter of my friend
as we trade one-liners of a tv show
few my age can remember.

Filling the silence
with shouts of “you do and I’ll be sorry!”
and convulsing with laughter at 1 AM.
We’ve found a common interest
that keeps us entertained.
Thank you for that.

I fell in love with your smile.
It cheers me up and makes me feel silly.
You were not “the dummy” to me.
You were always the one who cared.

This is my poem for Peter,
who makes me smile when I hear his voice
and makes me cry when no one’s looking.
